Internet and World Wide Web

To put it briefly, the internet is a global network of interconnected computer networks that allows for information, communication, and resources to be exchanged worldwide. The internet was invented by a group of scientists and engineers in the 1960s in the United States. During this time, the Cold War was going on and there was tension between North America and the Soviet Union. This led to the creation of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, or ARPANET which is known today as the internet. Even though the process of inventing the internet began around the 1960s, the official creation date of the internet is January 1, 1983 and it was originally used by military scientists and university staff. The internet has since evolved into the communication, information, and entertainment system that we recognize today.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web in 1989. He decided to invent it because he did not like the way information was separated as opposed to existing on one easily accessible network. The World Wide Web can be defined as a system of hypertext documents and multimedia content that is accessible through the internet through the use of web browsers. This granted users with the ability to search and find information from multiple documents. When it was first created, similarly to the internet, the World Wide Web was also used by military scientists and university staff, but is now used for social networking, online collaboration, and quick access to information.

The internet and the World Wide Web are different, but related systems. The internet is a huge public network of networks that acts as a global computer. The World Wide Web is a system used to navigate the internet. In simpler terms, the internet is the fundamental infrastructure for communication and data and the World Wide Web operates on the internet. The World Wide Web makes it easier for people to use and navigate the resources on the internet.

The first website was created on August 6, 1991. This website consisted
of information about the World Wide Web. There is not much to this website other than a brief description on what the World Wide Web is along with several hyperlinks that can take users to other sites to further their knowledge on the subject. The URL for this website is
http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html and can still be accessed by people today.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was an actress and inventor who created the frequency-hopping technology that is used for Bluetooth and WiFi. She experimented in her trailer on movie sets when she had free time. Jeff Black and Johnny Depp made a song about her titled This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr. The song alludes to the idea that the world looked at Lamarr as a beautiful star, but completely ignored her intellectual abilities. She was not given enough credit for the technological advancements she was able to make in her lifetime.

In 1994, Japp Haartsen developed Bluetooth. The engineers working on the Bluetooth technology decided it needed a catchy name and decided to relate it back to the viking era. It is named after King Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson who was given the nickname Bluetooth because he had a dead tooth that appeared to be blue. He was also known for uniting Denmark and Norway in 958 which related to the connectivity aspect of Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth logo is actually the Nordic runes letters H and B which are king Harald Bluetooth’s initials.

Several people contributed to the invention of WiFi. Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil invented the frequency hopping technology used in WiFi. Vic Hays is known as the father of WiFi as he was in charge of the committee that introduced it in 1997. Another important figure was Dr. John O’Sullivan who was the leader of a team of scientists who created a technology that reduced the echo of radiowaves leading to the introduction of the wireless LAN. The original name for WiFi was “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.” It wasn’t until the inventors were going to sell it in 1999, that they gave the technology the name WiFi.
